EASTERN EUROPE
Part I EXCLUSION ZONE UKRAINE

In 2008 and 2009 I joined a group of photographers to the Ukraine to document the life in the Exclusion Zone at Chernobyl, nearly 25 years after the worlds worst nuclear disaster had occurred on Saturday 26 April 1986, at the No. 4 reactor in the Chernobyl Nuclear Power Plant near the city of Pripyat.
I photographed in the city of Pripyat and all around the Exclusion Zone. It has been one of the most difficult assignments during my career as a photographer, because the real danger in the zone, the radiation is invisible. Shortly after our visit and a couple of months later the visit of Yulia Volodymyrivna Tymoshenko, who then was Primeminister of the Ukraine, the city of Pripyat was closed forever for visitors, due to the danger of collapse.
