SOUTH EAST ASIA

In 2003 I joined my then-husband on a business trip to Thailand. From there we traveled to Myanmar. A land I had heard so many things about during my previous work as a fashion designer in Asia. It was captivating, and beautiful and cruel at the same time. People were happy but suffered a lot under the ruling government, which had changed the name from Burma to Myanmar after thousands were killed in an uprising in 1989. During my travels I felt the longing of the people for democracy after being controlled by the military for so many years. Though fear still ruled the country, they trusted that change might come in the near future. Their hope was Aung San Suu Kyi, who at that time was kept in house arrest in her home at the capital of Rangoon.

This was my first photographic journey.
